Moberly–Jourdain incident

One of the most famous ghost stories in France revolves around the haunting of the Palace of Versailles. This story begins with two British women, Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain. In August of 1901, while visiting Versailles. they decided to tour the Petit Trianon, a small château on the palace grounds that Marie Antoinette cherished. While trying to find their way, they claimed to have experienced a strange phenomenon. The atmosphere around them altered and they began seeing people dressed in 18th-century clothing. They saw a woman sketching the landscape who they later believed to be Marie Antoinette herself. They also witnessed other scenes and characters from the time period including a plowing farmer and a scar-faced man who frightened them. Confused and terrified, they left the château. After researching, they decided they had somehow traveled back in time or experienced "ghosts" from the past. They published their experiences in a book titled 'An Adventure', initially under the pseudonyms Miss Morison and Miss Lamont in 1911. The tale, which became known as the "Moberly–Jourdain incident" has been widely criticized and debunked, yet it remains one of France's most famous and enduring ghost stories. Due to its narrative, it has also found a place in discussions about time slips, parallel dimensions, and the paranormal.
