Red Man of Tuileries
One of the most famous ghost stories from France is that of the "Red Man of Tuileries," the infamous ghost of the Tuileries Palace in Paris. The story dates back to the 16th century when Catherine de Medici, the Queen of France, hired a personal astrologer and magician named Cosimo Ruggeri. It's said that the man was known to perform dark rituals and predictions using black magic. However, after foreseeing the death of Catherine's husband, Henry II, Ruggeri fell out of favor and despite rumors that he was buried alive in the walls of the palace, his ghost began to haunt its corridors. Ruggeri appears as a man wearing red which led to his nickname the "Red Man." Other than just being sighted, the Red Man supposedly offers prophecies about the future of France. He supposedly appeared before Louis XVIII before his death and before the burning of the Tuileries during the Paris Commune in 1871. Thus, the spooky tale of the "Red Man of Tuileries" has been passed down in France over centuries, being a prominent ghost story of the nation. Today the site is home to the Louvre Museum and the spirit is believed to haunt its area even after the Tuileries Palace was destroyed.
