The Red Man of Tuileries

One of the most famous ghost stories from France is the tale of "The Red Man of Tuileries". The Tuileries Palace in Paris was once the royal residence of many French kings. The palace has since been destroyed, but its gardens remain a key attraction in the city. There have been many reports of ghostly sightings in this area, but none as well-known as of the Red Man or the "Fantôme Rouge". The Red Man is said to be the ghost of a butcher who was murdered during the reign of King Henry IV in the early 17th century. The butcher, whose real name was Jean, was considered a palace insider, as he was extremely close to Catherine de Medici, the queen mother. Once she passed away, Jean was killed due to his knowledge of many palace secrets. His spirit didn't rest in peace, however. Instead, Jean, who was called the "Red Man" due to his crimson butcher's outfit, started to appear to subsequent rulers of the palace, usually as a forewarning of upcoming disasters or dramatic turn of events. He is reported to have appeared to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette before the French Revolution and their deaths. Even Napoleon Bonaparte, who lived in the Tuileries Palace before it was destroyed in a fire, claimed to have seen the ghost. The Red Man supposedly offered him advice and made eerily accurate predictions about his reign. Though the palace no longer stands, some claim that the Red Man of the Tuileries still haunts the area, forever bound to the ground where the royal residence once stood.
