  3. Go to your outdoor, open space. You want plenty of room as your rockets will shoot high up!
  4. In the first film canister, add one tablespoon of baking soda. Pour the vinegar into the canister until it is halfway filled.
  5. Quickly snap the cap onto the canister and shake it a little. Stand back and watch the rocket soar!
  6. Meticulously note down the height that this rocket reached.
  7. Repeat the process with different amounts of baking soda and vinegar. Always make sure to note down the proportions you used each time and how high each rocket traveled.
  8. Compare the results of each launch to understand how varying amounts of reactants impact the reaction force and the height of the rocket's trajectory.

  • 1 Packet of Baking Soda
  • 1 Small Bottle of Vinegar
  • 1 Funnel
  • 1 Teaspoon
  • 1 Set of Eye Protection/Goggles
  • Craft materials (like stickers, colored markers, glitter etc) for rocket decoration

Instructions

  1. Use the craft materials to design and decorate the outside of the film canister, which will be your rocket.
  2. Using the teaspoon, add baking soda into the film canister until it’s about 1/3 full.
  3. Place your eye protection on to ensure safety in case of splashes or the rocket launching unexpectedly.
  4. Using the funnel, slowly pour the vinegar into the canister until it’s about 1/2 full.
  5. Quickly snap on the lid of the film canister, making sure it’s secure and tight.
  6. Turn the canister upside down and step back. The combined vinegar and baking soda should cause the canister to launch like a rocket!
  7. Experiment by adding different amounts of vinegar and baking soda to see how it affects the height the rocket achieves. Note down the results for each attempt.

Safety Tips

Always wear eye protection while conducting the experiment to protect your eyes. Do not aim the rocket towards people, animals, or breakable objects. Always conduct the experiment in an open space.
